What is mailing list?

Mailing list are public discussions that anyone can subscribe to and participate in. You read what other have written and post your own reply. Mailing list is simply a list of e-mail addresses of people interested in the same subject. Someone sends out a message and it goes to everybody on the list. You can reply to the messages, send new messages, or just lurk, reading the messages without participating. It's up to you.

Each time you or anyone else on the list posts a reply, it's distributed to the e-mail box of everyone else on the list. All of this traffic is automatically managed by programs called Mailing List Managers (MLM'S) or Mail Servers.

 

The key advantage of a mailing list over a newsgroup is that instead of having to go somewhere to read or retrieve the contents of a discussion, it is automatically sent to you via e-mail.

Beberapa tips dalam menggunakan mailing list:

1. Subscribe satu atau dua mailing list terlebih dahulu, kemudian lihat banyaknya mail yang anda terima, setelah itu baru anda subscribe mailing list yang lain.
   
2. Simpan dan baca instruksi instruksi yang diberikan setelah anda subscribe ke salah satu mailing list.
   
3. Matikan/unsubscribe mailing list yang anda ikuti pada saat anda sedang berlibur. Dan subscribe kembali setelah anda kembali. Mailing list yang dengan traffic mail yang banyak menimbulkan beratus ratus mail setiap harinya dan akan menumpuknya mail pada mailbox anda sehingga akan mempengaruhi kapasitas penyimpanan pada server.

Here are some additional tips for using mailing lists:

1. Subscribe to one or two mailing lists at a time, then wait to see how many messages you receive before you subscribe to any others.
   
2. Save the list subscription instructions. After you send your subscription request e-mail message, you will get a response with instructions on how it works and perhaps most important, how to leave it. You are expected to read and save these instructions. It is considered bad netiquette to send messages to the list requesting help in unsubscribing.
